Cooper caught up with Hannah right before she was supposed to start her shift. He boxed her in behind the bar and leveled a “it’s time to talk” look on her.

“Oh, I’m going to hate this, aren’t I?” Hannah muttered, making a face.

“Probably,” he confirmed. Even though he was serious, he couldn’t help smiling. The obstinate tilt of her chin always did strange things to his heart. “We need to talk about Tyler.”

“What about him?” Hannah was the picture of innocence as she tried to edge around Cooper. “He’s one of my favorite people in the world. You’re on top of that list in case you’re wondering.”

“I like winning, so that’s good. You’re on the top of my list, too.”

“I know. I’m good like that.”

His grin widened. “You are. You’re also good at avoiding the subject when I want to talk about something serious.”

“Is that what you’re doing now?”

“I just want to remind you that Tyler is an adult. He doesn’t need you meddling in his personal life.”

“Is this you saying I’m a busybody again?”

“Actually, I think you’re normally pretty good about this stuff. You tend to worry about our relationship more than what’s going on with the others, which is exactly how I like it.”

“But?” she prodded.

“But Tyler needs to make his own decisions on who he wants to date. You can’t force him and David together.”

“Nobody is forcing anything. They’re obviously sparking all on their own.”

“I noticed that myself. The thing is, they need to move at their own pace. This might just be a harmless flirtation.”

“What if it’s not, though?”

“Then they’ll decide that on their own.” Cooper was firm. “You’re not the boss of them.”

“Am I the boss of you?”

He smirked. “If you want to play that game later, I think I can be persuaded. You’re not the boss of Tyler no matter what.”

“Technically, since I own Casper Creek, I am his boss.”

“Hannah ... .” Cooper’s voice took on an edge she wasn’t familiar with. “You can’t force this situation.”

Pent up petulance escaped on a sigh. “Why do you naturally assume I’m going to do something that won’t be welcome in this situation?”

“Because I see the way you look at them.” Cooper tried to be reasonable instead of bossy. “It’s hard for Tyler here, Hannah.” His voice was low. “This isn’t a major metropolitan area. He has to put up with a lot of crap from some of the ‘good old boys’ who thinking being gay makes him less than we both know he is.” He used air quotes for emphasis. “You can’t insert yourself into his love life.”

Hannah was taken aback. “I don’t plan on making him do something he doesn’t want to do.”

“That’s good, but I don’t believe you.”

“Oh, well, now you’re calling me a liar.”

“Here we go,” he muttered under his breath, shaking his head. “I love you more than anything. I see the way you look at them, though. Step back and allow Tyler to handle his own affairs.”

“Fine.” Hannah’s eyes lit with annoyance.
